The story of this game was simple, the J.J. McCarthy era in Minnesota started with a punch. For three quarters, it felt like the Bears were in control up double digits an going to start the season 1-0 , pushing the Vikings’ defense around, and looking ready to spoil the rookie’s debut. But In the fourth quarter McCarthy went from struggling to proving in a blink, dropping two touchdowns passes in the 4th and added one on the ground , showing exactly why Minnesota made him their QB1.

The positives are obvious: McCarthy doesn’t rattle. Even when the game felt lost, he kept trusting his protection, and finding guys late in plays. That kind of composure is rare for a rookie, and it gave the Vikings life. Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson came alive in crunch time, creating mismatches left and rright. The offensive line deserves love too protection tightened up when it mattered most, giving McCarthy the pocket to operate.

Defensively, while they were leaky at times, they created turnovers that gave Minnesota extra chances, and you can’t overlook how big those are in one score games.

Negatives? The slow start can’t happen against better teams. The run game was nonexistent for most of the day, forcing McCarthy to shoulder almost everything late. Coverage breakdowns in the secondary let Caleb Williams and D.J. Moore connect too easily early on. Special teams added some unnecessary drama with a missed extra point in the second quarter. And situational football, third downs on both sides of the ball was shaky until late. .

What we learned about the Vikings:

J.J. McCarthy has “it.” Composure, poise, and the ability to flip a game when the lights are bright. So far...
This offense is stacked Addison, Hockenson, and Jefferson make them dangerous from every angle.
The running game is a concern. If McCarthy has to throw 40+ times a week, it’ll catch up to him.
The defense is opportunistic but not consistent, hey give up yards and points in bunches.
Minnesota has resilience. Even down double digits, they believe they can claw back. .

Chicago Bears
For Chicago, this one stings because it felt like their game until it wasn’t. Caleb Williams looked every bit like a No. 1 pick confident, making tight window throws, and showing of his chemistry with D.J. Moore. For three quarters, the Bears offense looked polished and dangerous. They ran the ball effectively enough to stay balanced, the line gave Williams time, and the defense forced Minnesota into punts and mistakes.

Positives : Williams composure, Moore’s explosive playmaking, and the defense generating a turnover early that gave Chicago the cushion. The pass rush hit McCarthy plenty in the first half, and the secondary read routes well, forcing the rookie into hesitations and an interception later in the game.

But the negatives piled up in the fourth quarter. The offense stalled completely, with three straight punts that gave Minnesota chance after chance. The defense, so aggressive early, suddenly went soft in coverage, giving up huge cushions and easy completions. A missed field goal in the second half loomed large when the lead started to shrink. And once momentum swung, Chicago had no counterpunch, the coaching staff didn’t adjust, and the players looked like they were playing not to lose.

What we learned about the Bears:

Caleb Williams is the real deal arm talent, mobility aren’t the issue. He needs to settle down and make the easy throws in late game situations, too many missed opportunities
D.J. Moore is still the centerpiece of this offense and can break a game open at any moment. Luther Burton III needs to find his role in the offense.
The Bears defense has playmakers, but depth and late game discipline remain shaky.
Special teams mistakes (missed FG) can be the difference in tight divisional games.
Chicago isn’t ready to close out games against teams that refuse to fold.
