This Week 1 matchup is one for the history books. The NFL is going international, and what better way to kick it off than with a game between two of the AFC West’s biggest names? Kansas City, fresh from a 15–2 season and a tough Super Bowl loss, heads to São Paulo’s Neo Química Arena.

On the opposite sideline, the Chargers, an 11–6 team in Jim Harbaugh’s first year, are chasing respect.

What is going to set the Chiefs apart is consistency. They’ve stayed unbeaten internationally with wins in London, Mexico, and Germany. They’ve owned this divisional rivalry, winning seven in a row and nine of the last ten meetings. But don’t be fooled.. eight of those came down to the final minute, tight, tense games, where Chiefs pulled ahead late. Mahomes holds a 7–1 record against Herbert, so the edge is there for the Chargers but That’s the challenge they haven’t yet overcome.

Chargers Offense: Rebuilt O-Line, Fresh Backs, Allen Returns

The Chargers’ biggest offseason pivot came at the line of scrimmage. Rashawn Slater’s patellar tendon injury while rehabbing destroyed what looked like an elite front. The solution? Trey Pipkins flips to right tackle, and first-rounder Joe Alt steps into the left tackle position his college home. Alt’s been training at both spots, but starts his pro career with a gargantuan task:

stopping Chris Jones and that KC pressure rotation that hunts weaknesses. It’s do or die and early misfires or communication mistakes could swing the whole game in Kansas city's favor.

Behind that line, there’s reason for optimism. Najee Harris is recovered from an eye injury he suffered this summer in a firework incident and is expected to play, bringing some physical thump to the ground game. Rookie Omarion Hampton adds speed and depth. That’s a massive shift from last season, when the Chiefs held them to just a 3.1 ypc and 0.5 yards before contact. In their two games last season the Chargers' longest carry was a whopping 12 yards.. pretty brutal. Herbert’s rhythm got broken, and unless L.A. can keep those gains consistent, this becomes a blowout not a close one.

On the pass side of the offense, Keenan Allen’s return is huge. He’s still Herbert’s go to move on third and mediums or in tight spaces. But there’s been buzz around younger options too: Ladd McConkey who broke out in year one and Quentin Johnston add juice and size to the room, making coverage choices harder. Allen’s still WR1 but now he has to earn it. Herbert needs protection, rhythm, and smart usage of these weapons to keep this offense coherent.

Rashee Rice, Leaning on Kelce and RPOs

From the Chiefs’ side, the headline is Rashee Rice’s six game suspension. Losing your breakout star just before opening kickoff is rough, no question. Kansas City’s plan?

Lean into what’s proven with a twist. Hollywood Brown is healthy and ready to go, bringing that speed-threat presence they’ve missed since Tyreek, while rookie Xavier Worthy adds another dimension. They’re not replicating Rice, they’re reshaping the aerial attack.

Over the top volume isn’t back yet. Mahomes’ 2024 deep ball numbers slipped he was

18th in attempts of 15+ yards, 31st in PFF on those throws, with 11 turnover-worthy ones.

So Andy Reid is shifting gears:

RPOs, quick crossers, YAC-focused plays, and the unstoppable Travis Kelce. At 35, Kelce claims he’s more motivated than ever, and he’s the connective tissue of this offense right now.

On the ground, KC’s still rolling their backs around Pacheco, Hunt, and Elijah Mitchell dividing duties to keep bodies fresh and defensive fronts guessing. It’s less about volume, more about effectiveness and avoiding the inconsistency of 2024’s deep plays by being smart and steady instead.

Chargers Defense: Disguises,Disruptions, and Downfield Control

Going against the Chiefs means navigating Jesse Minter’s increasingly dangerous defense. Former Michigan DC, Minter runs a scheme dripping with disguises pre-snap coverage, safety rotations, disguised blitz angles, and zone-match on third down.

Last year, that system kept KC to 17 and 19 points, which is basically opposite of the reputation of Mahomesville.

It’s also about limiting the big play. The Chargers were top-five in both limiting 15+ yard completions and yards allowed on those throws in 2024. Guess what KC has struggled with? Big explosive plays. If Mack, Tuipulotu, and the D-Line can pressure but not overcommit, and the secondary can hold its ground, they can turn a potential shootout into a ball control slugfest.

Chiefs Defense: Spagnuolo’s Formula and Run-Stuffing Dominance

Kansas City’s defense isn’t getting headlines, but don’t sleep on it. Steve Spagnuolo is a front magician he’ll go even versus gap, odd for zone, then fire pressure lanes when Herbert needs to drop and get it out.

The linebackers Nick Bolton and Leo Chenal are tackling machines, sealing gaps and forcing negative contact before Chargers’ backs can even see daylight.

That’s why last year, LA averaged under 25 rushing yards per game in their two matchups. Offense dries up when the line collapses and that’s where KC thrives late, keeping things tight until Mahomes can strike.

Kelce and Brown may have limitations, so watch snap counts, but both are expected to suit up. No surprises yet.

Game Flow and What to Expect

This won’t be a track meet. Last year proved it, these games grind more than they explode. Both defenses match up well against what the other team does best. The Chargers can limit KC’s deep shots, and KC can choke out L.A.’s run game. That means this comes down to situational football: red zone execution, third-down conversions, and who avoids the one mistake that flips momentum.

Harbaugh wants complementary football run game + protection + efficient Herbert. If that holds, the Chargers have their best chance in years. For KC, it’s business as usual, stay patient, keep it close, and let Mahomes own the 4th quarter.

Prediction

Vegas has KC -3, O/U 45.5. That’s about right. These games always end tight. The Chargers will push, Herbert will have his moments, and Harbaugh will scheme enough to keep it interesting. But history repeats.

Chiefs 24, Chargers 21. Another nail biter, another Mahomes late-game dagger.
